People below 30 years of age in the UK will be offered an alternative COVID-19 vaccine to the AstraZeneca shot on account of evidence linking it to rare blood clots.
The recommendation comes after the UK drugs regulator found in a review that by the end of March, 79 individuals had developed rare blood clots following vaccination. Nineteen of them had died. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)’s review revealed that 79 cases and 19 deaths occurred after 20 million administered doses of the vaccine, translating to a risk of about four in a million of developing a blood clot, and one in a million of death.
